Richard Roger  the President of LeedsGreen.org has just completed rigorous training and accreditation for BPI's Building Analyst and Envelope Professional Designation In anticipation of the upcoming HomeStar Program for Homeowners.

BPI (Building Performance Institute) is a leading developer of technical standards for home performance and weatherization retrofit work that is recognized across North America.   BPI is concerned with comfort, health, safety, durability and energy efficiency.  Many homes where constructed before modern energy and building codes were established.  These homes often suffer from performance problems ranging from inflated energy consumption to poor thermal comfort to indoor air quality issues.  BPI certified professionals follow the strict BPI standards when performing an energy audit.  The audit checks for safety of the furnace, making sure the furnace is drafting properly.  Some furnaces have incomplete combustion or blocked flues and can emit Carbon Monoxide into your home.  Your BPI certified professional will test for gas leaks and make sure your system is performing well.  The audit includes a blower door test, which identifies where your home is leaking energy to a complete walk around your home.   The BPI energy audit can last as long as four hours.

Many of the recommendations from the results of the test can be performed by the homeowner.  A Caulking gun and Insulation go a long way.  Drafty windows can be repaired by caulking around the molding.  Keep an eye out for the Energy Star program.  This federal program is expected to offer federal tax breaks to homeowners who receive qualified energy audits  and do the necessary  retrofit that can save as much as 30% on your energy bill.
